what is an electric vehicle (EV)?

there are 3 basic types of vehicles

1. plug-in EV

This vehicle is powered by an all-electric motor, which uses energy stored in a rechargeable battery.

2. plug-in hybrid EV

This vehicle is powered by an electric motor and a rechargeable battery. If the battery is depleted the engine can switch to gas to provide power until you fill up or plug in.

3. conventional hybrid

Conventional hybrid automobiles combine a small battery and a regular internal combustion (gas) engine to power the vehicle.

why EV’s are popular now

the key to the EV’s strength is in its battery

Historically the driving distance that we could get out of a battery has been the limiting factor.

Within the last five years batteries have been widely adopted in many industries (such as laptops, cell phones, and power tools). Battery manufacturers have developed new batteries that are lighter, stronger, and more cost effective than ever before.

lithium-ion batteries

high tech lithium-ion batteries have revolutionized EV’s lapto

use in electronics

Lithium-ion batteries are used in cell phones and laptops due to the amount of power that they can provide despite their size.

battery cooling systems

EV manufacturers have included battery cooling systems to make sure that the battery is always operating at an ideal temperature, and most have a 10-year warranty.

special EV characteristics

the unique differences in owning an EV

low-resistance tires

Low rolling resistance tires are standard on EV’s, they make it easier for the car to roll across a flat surface. Think of it as a bowling ball going down the alley – it’s effortless.

regenerative braking

As the brakes are applied, the electric motors reverse direction. The torque created by this slows the car’s momentum and is used to recharge the battery.

aerodynamic shape

EV manufactures have paid special attention to the design of the vehicles so that they are very aerodynamic similar to a race car or an airplane.

programmable attributes

Most EV’s can be programed to charge at night when electricity is at its lowest demand. Other cool EV features can even be programed right from your smart phone.

why are EV’s for me?

how EV’s can improve your driving experience

EV’s are fun to drive

With a low center of gravity and tons of low end torque the average electric car can perform like a sports car.

electricity is cheaper

When compared to gasoline, the average driver could save over $2,000 per year.

EV’s are low maintenance

EV's require less regular maintenance. Oil changes, engine tune-ups, and most other regular maintenance can be nearly eliminated.

electricity is cleaner

There are no tailpipe emissions when using an EV in electric mode.

electricity is produced locally

Using the existing, American-made electric grid to power cars, we could move towards energy independence.

EV Charger installation

level 1 Can plug directly into a 110 volt outlet, but has the slowest charging time. These units are portable and do not have to be mounted. level 2 240 volt units can reduce charging time and charge you up to 5 times faster than level 1. Installation requires knowledge of electrical systems, codes, and some permits may be required. Tax credits or local utility incentives are available in some states. Using an Eaton Certified Contactor Network electrician is is suggested when installing Eaton level 2 chargers.

charging time

level 1 charger

A level 1 charger comes standard with most EV’s. It transfers 1500 watts per hour, which would take approximately 20 hours to completely charge most EVs.

level 2 charger 30amp

A 7.2kw charger or 30amp unit, which will typically allow you to charge 5x faster than the level 1 unit, depending on your vehicle.
*Vehicle charging speed may be limited by on-board vehicle charger.
